Pure Storage integration with Universal Storage API

Pure Storage integration with Universal Storage API

Michael cade

In late 2017, Veeam released the Universal Storage API with Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 Update 3. This framework offers integrations with storage systems to help lessen the impact on the production environment and significantly improve recovery point objectives (PROs).

Today, Veeam announces Pure Storage as the next storage provider to achieve this integration framework. With more and more companies moving forward and adopting flash storage solutions that help businesses achieve more predictable performance throughout an increasingly demanding business workload, it goes without saying that the need for Always-On Availability. In effect, this increases the RTO and RPO requirements of the SLA.

Reduces performance impact on production workloads

The features that this framework unlocks are the ability to reduce the performance impact on the primary VMware state when creating VMware snapshots, offloading this process to the storage array and then taking the storage backup.

Enables granular recovery for storage snapshots

Second, the ability to use Veeam Explorer for storage snapshots, to gain visibility into historical snapshots, yet still provide the ability to perform granular recovery tasks that were not even created by Veeam in the storage arrangement.

Application Consistent Storage Snapshot Orchestration

Third, and very important to closing recovery point objectives, is the ability to take application-consistent snapshots on the storage array, in order to provide an option for rapid information retrieval, up to the application item level.

Automated restoration verification and on-demand labs: “Put your data to work”

Last, but probably most important, is the ability to do more with snapshots that have been created consistently with the application; With this integration, you will have the ability to leverage this data for many different use cases.

One use case where the functionality could really benefit these companies is DevOps, the ability to create copies of their production environment in minutes, so their developers can test new features against production-like data, without affect the performance and timings of production workloads. All this while using the Pure Storage FlashArray features, including thin provisioning, deduplication, and compression.

Another use case revolves around modern data analytics, the ability to take production workload and leverage that data, so that as an end user, you can gain insight into your workloads and achieve more with these findings. and add value to your business, without having to worry about underlying infrastructure and performance.
